HAVING A NECROPSY OR AUTOPSY ON A CHINCHILLA
This is my experience with having a necropsy performed on a chinchilla that had died
I had bought several chinchilla breeding pairs from a well known breeder in California and had them about 6 months. One of the males, a 3 year old ebony, of the pairs died suddenly with no symptons. His mate was fine, but with a whole herd of chinchillas in the same room I wanted to see if I could find out what could have happened to have caused his death.
I talked to my vet and decided to have a necropsy performed getting an estimated price of $111. I had to take the animal to the Ohio Department of Agriculture myself, fill out the forms and I also took samples of my distilled water, feed, hay and shavings.
They performed the necropsy and the results came back "inconclusive", which I am told is what usually happens. They didn't test any of the other stuff I brought. They do not send you the results, it is sent to your vet. They also send the bill to your vet. It took them a year to send the bill and it was $192.00, almost double what I was told it would be and it was of no help to me.
