I have about 150 chinchillas and they each have their own individual personalities; likes and dislikes. Most chinchillas are pretty laid back and it really doesn't matter if they are male or female. 2 females raised together will get along just as well as 2 males raised together.
The only time I see a difference is when a male and female are in breeding together. When you first put a male in with a female he will want to mate with her right away, over and over, even if she is not in heat. The female will get annoyed with this behavior and give the male what for by standing up on her hind legs and barking at the male. Generally females are a little larger and I would say the boss of the relationship.
Also you would never want to put a female next to a cage or in a cage with 2 males. That could cause the 2 males to fight because they would both want the female for themselves.
