They love their wheel. Please make sure you get one for your chinchilla. It's great exercise, relieves boredom and keeps them in healthy, tip top shape. It has really tiny squares so it is less likely to get their feet caught . It can be mounted on the wall or set on the floor of the cage. Make sure you take it out right away if your chinchilla has babies because they can be seriously injured . I like this model because if they go to the bathroom while they are on the wheel (which they will) it just falls through and doesn't roll around with them. It usually takes a chinchilla a couple days to figure the wheel and then they are hooked!
Chinchillas like to be on the highest object in the cage and they are always taking turns jumping up on the the shelf . Well, usually they take turns, but sometimes they all try to fit as you can see in the picture below! Shelf is 6" x 6".

I buy the extra large woodland getaway house so they have plenty of room, especially if you have a pair of the chinchillas in the same cage and if they have babies. For one chinchilla I would get the large size. I prefer the natural wood houses instead of the colorful ones because the colorful houses don't look so hot after the chinchillas chew on them, which they will. Also I like the solid houses instead of the kind you put together because they hold up better. Super Pet changed the way they make these. Now they put them together with wooden dowels. No more nails and metal inserts. Much better!!
I have taken the plastic dust house off of my site and will no longer sell them. The ones I have now are starting to come apart and they are less than a year old so I have started using a large mouth square glass jar. They are dishwasher safe. The chins can't chew them up. They come with a lid. You can put the jar in twice a week with a packet full of dust (I just use 2 handfuls) and leave it in for about 15 minutes. You can keep reusing the dust until it stops feeling soft and starts to feel gritty. You have to use dust made for chin baths only. They sell this jar at Walmart. It's where the drinking glasses are. The jar is called a cracker jar and is about $7.00.
These are the cages I keep my breeding pairs in. Each pair has 36"x24"x18" of space. My cages do not have wire bottoms because this can cause sore paws. I use either plastic or metal trays with comfy pine shavings.
The cage to the right is a custom oversized cage I made using (2) 30" x 30" plastic cage trays put together to make a 30" x 60" cage for a playground so the chinchillas can run off steam and play around. You can also sit with them in a small room where there are no small areas they can get loose in or stuck. I used heavy duty 14 gauge wire from http://www.klubertanz.com to make this cage extra strong, but I use 16 gauge wire for regular sized cages, which is much easier to cut than the 14 gauge. If you use galvanized wire it helps to keep the wire from rusting. I use a pair of heavy duty wire cutters from klubertanz, but they also have electric tools that work much better, but cost quite a bit more.
It's best to keep a new chinchilla away from the rest of your herd for about 4 weeks to make sure they are completely healthy so they do not pass anything onto your other chinchillas. I do not put new chinchillas into this playground area until they have reached their 4 week period. Remember to only put a breeding pair or cage buddies in any room or cage together because chinchillas are territorial.
The bigger the cage the better. Chinchillas love to run and jump. I would not go smaller than 24"x 24"x16"tall. Then you can put a jump n ledge shelf in a corner about 5 inches from the top. When it's time to use the dust bath you can switch it with the chin house or set it on top of the house and hook to the cage for stability. This leaves room for a wheel. Adults and weaned chinchillas can have openings 1" x 2". Baby chinchillas under 6 weeks of age can't have openings bigger than 1/2" x 1".

I use this cage for my breeders, but this is an excellent pet cage too. I order it with 2 cage pans so both levels have pine shavings and no wire floor for the chins to stand on. I have Martins make the top of the cage a lift top so it's easy to take the second floor pan out if needed and the bottom is a slide out pan so it can be taken out to clean also. It is shipped flat and easy to put together. I can also put the cage together for you, fee $25 additional. Since the pans are completely enclosed in wire there is no way that a chinchilla could chew it's way out of the cage. I also wrap a 12" high x 10' long piece of fleece around the bottom walls of the cage to keep the chins from knocking the shavings out of the cage. 16 gauge wire.
When I clean my cages I use a small dust pan to scoop out dirty shavings and another one to scoop in clean shavings. Once a month I wipe down the cage pans with a safe cage cleaner.
